Pre-Algebra 6

Welcome!

It is a fabulous time to be a young learner. Welcome to the world of mathematics at the 6^th grade level. This year will provide support in becoming a stronger mathematician. Math 6 is designed to support young learners with all different areas in the world of mathematics. Through real life examples, students will gain an understanding of how math is used on a day-to-day basis.

Course Information

Pre-Algebra 6 serves as a bridge from arithmetic to a more formal study of topics in both Algebra and Geometry. This fast-paced course combines elements of the Pre-Algebra 7 curriculum (operations with rational numbers, factors and multiples, ratios and percentages, exponents, expressions, multi-step equations, geometric relationships, coordinate graphing) with a variety of other mathematical explorations including data analysis, Venn diagrams, radicals, imaginary numbers, and functions. Pre-Algebra 6 students typically progress to Algebra 1 in 7th grade.

Teaching Philosophy

I am a highly motivated and organized educator, I set high academic standards, encourage students to perform with excellence and I strive to make the learning experience memorable and enjoyable. My experience has shown me that scholars learn best when they participate in a learning process. Therefore, my approach promotes active scholar participation in academics.

I utilize content to develop skills and challenge scholar through methods such as cooperative learning and oral/written assessments. Scholars under my instruction are knowledgeable of the goal they must achieve through rubric grading and clearly defined objectives. Emphasis is placed on the development of learning and communication skills as well as critical thinking. I worked diligently with my scholars to master writing in math which is pertinent to communication and to the expression of knowledge.

I have continued to integrate the latest computer technology through the use of PowerPoint presentations, and internet applications (researching projects). In addition, parent-teacher contact and cooperation is vital. This has enhanced my effectiveness in the classroom and enabled me to develop a support network for my scholars.

I hope to serve as a positive role model to ALL scholars, to promote self-esteem, create a nurturing environment and enable my scholars to grow both in and out of the classroom and prepare ALL scholars to face the challenges of tomorrow. With classrooms being filled with diverse learners, children bring with them numerous learning styles, needs, experiences and levels of ability. Education is derived from the Latin word "Educo" which means to bring out that which is within. My belief is that as an educator it is my job to bring out the education that is already within a scholar.

"Nine tenths of education is encouragement" (~~Anatole France) is one of my favorite quotes. If a a scholar is motivated, engaged, and encouraged, he or she will go far! Without a passion for learning, it is more challenging to reach the highest achievements. As an educator I strongly believe in this quote as I encourage my scholars to strive for the best in everything that they do!
